The research funding landscape is rather complex in France, involving hundreds of organisations ranging from ministries to private foundations. From a foreign researcher's point of view, here are a few organisations and guides among the most important.
France Contact
France Contact, the France's guest researchers and grantholders website, publishes (in English) a list of research and state organisations and programmes that offer financial support to researchers (grants, postdoctoral fellowships...).

National Research Agency
The National Research Agency (ANR) is a state organisation which supports research projects through call for tenders. More and more programmes involve international cooperation and partnerships, and some of them are especially focused on attracting foreign researchers in France (chairs of excellence, for example). The ANR's website is in French only.

French Government Scholarships
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs several funding programmes intended for foreign students and researchers: academic scholarships, training course awards, high-level visiting scientists fellowships, Eiffel scholarships... Information about those programmes is given in English and in French.

ANDES Guide to Research Funding
The research funding guide published by ANDES, the French PhDs association, is a genuine 'bible' in this area: PhD and postdoctoral fellowships, prizes, research grants... The guide is available free of charge after signing up (in French only).
