France's R&D expenditures are over € 36 billion, that is to say 2.13 percent of the GDP. The R&D staff is about 350,000 people including 200,000 researchers. Nearly 10,000 PhD degrees are awarded every year. R&D is carried out by state research organisations (CNRS, INSERM, INRA...), universities and other higher education institutions, and private companies.
